Manning Trailhead ~ Buxton Trestle

Sundays 10am - 1pm

(Sunday, 4/27 we meet @ Fernhill Park for 1 hour Nia only 8:30-9:30am, click her for more details on MeetUp )

Our hike will take us, out and back to the Buxton Trestle, along the Banks Vernonia State Trail, starting @ Manning Trailhead.

  • Our round trip distance, starting @ Manning Trailhead, will be around 5.7 miles with elevation gain of 220 feet (aka flat). This is a paved bike/pedestrian trail.

  • We will walk the 700 foot span across Buxton Trestle, constructed in 1920, this decommissioned railroad trestle supported passing trains before being converted into a rail trail, a flat and easy stroll.

  • We will admire the forest from the canopy level, where we will hear the rushing water of Mendenhall Creek below as we look out onto a grassy clearing surrounded by a forest of Doug firs, big-leaf maples, and red alders.

  • We will dance our Nia Somatic movement next to the trestle, unless it is pouring rain, then we can dance under cover of a large picnic shelter.

  • This un-dammed river carves cliffs and creates beaches in the park as it carries snowmelt and glacial till from its source on Mount Hood.

  • For our 3.5 mile hike along the Ancient Forest Trail, we will explore some gentle grades along the river's terraces and some steeper trails up a ridge between the river's bends.

  • We will dance our Nia Somatic movement by the water.
